Google yesterday released BlackBerry and Android applications that support its still-in-testing Voice service. Although the news is relatively minor in the grand scheme of things, the actions highlight a number of important and potentially serious issues in the wireless industry–including what appears to be the growing sentiment that wireless carriers are in serious threat of becoming dumb pipes.

Earlier this year, Microsoft unveiled plans to put an on-device software store on upcoming Windows Mobile 6.5 models. Today, it announced this store will also be available for many current models.
Windows Marketplace for Mobile will debut this fall, along with the next version of Microsoft’s operating system for smartphones. In addition, it will be available for devices running Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.0 before the end of this year.

Mobile internet boom continues, driven by Facebook
Over a quarter of young people are using social networking sites on their mobiles every day, a CCS Insight report has claimed.
The growth in mobile internet usage is so strong, said the report, that operators are relying on it to fill revenue gaps as profit margins fall.
